Now Get InvestmentGuruIndia.com news on WhatsApp. Paris- The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) offers about $340 billion cost-saving opportunity for those retail companies that are able to scale and expand the scope of their existing deployments, according to a new global study from French technology services major Capgemini. However, just one per cent of retailers have achieved this level of deployment so far, showed the results from the study titled "Building the Retail Superstar: How unleashing AI across functions offers a multi-billion dollar opportunity". The researchers found that most retailers are focusing their AI efforts on sales and marketing when there is a significant opportunity to unleash AI use cases across the value chain. "Our research shows a clear imbalance of organisations prioritizing cost, data and ROI (return on investment) when deploying AI, with only a small minority considering the customer pain points also," Kees Jacobs, Vice President, Global Consumer Products and Retail Sector at Capgemini said in a statement.

The NITI Aayog on Wednesday entered into a partnership with technology company ABB India to work together towards realizing the government's ambitious vision of'Make in India' through advanced manufacturing technologies that incorporate the latest developments in robotics and Artificial Intelligence (AI). As per the statement of intent (SoI) signed on Wednesday, the NITI Aayog will work with ABB across various sectors to suggest solutions for digitalization, incorporating the Internet of Things (IoT) and AI technologies. Jointly, NITI Aayog and ABB will work with ministries, solicit feedback for areas critical to them and discuss solutions using industrial automation, and digitalization technologies. "We are looking forward to learning more about practical applications of future technologies such as AI and IoT, especially in streamlining governance and economic systems. "This collaboration, which will include cross-sectoral understanding of digitalization at ABB's world class centres, will be key in driving progress of key sectors in India," said NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant.

Just as most smartphone cameras now allow users to focus on a single object among many, it may soon be possible to pick out individual voices in a crowd by suppressing all other sounds, thanks to a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) system developed by Google researchers. This is an important development as computers as not as good as humans at focusing their attention on a particular person in a noisy environment. Known as the cocktail party effect, the capability to mentally "mute" all other voices and sounds comes natural to us humans. However, automatic speech separation -- separating an audio signal into its individual speech sources -- remains a significant challenge for computers, Inbar Mosseri and Oran Lang, software engineers at Google Research, wrote in a blog post this week. In a new paper, the researchers presented a deep learning audio-visual model for isolating a single speech signal from a mixture of sounds such as other voices and background noise.

Tech honchos in Silicon Valley are deeply worried at China's rapid progress in harnessing Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology that has shown encouraging results in changing the way we work and live. Measured by start-up financing deals and dollars from venture capitalists, the United States' AI start-up ecosystem currently dominates -- followed by China, says a recent Accenture analysis titled "Rewire for Growth". When it comes to India, the number of AI start-ups has increased since 2011 at a compounded annual growth rate of 86 per cent. But the size of funding till date is substantially smaller in India than in the US and China, reflecting the limited success of India's AI start-ups in achieving scale so far, the report noted. "According to our analysis, AI has the potential to add $957 billion, or 15 per cent of current gross value added, to India's economy in 2035," said Accenture.

As the scope for cyber breaches continues to expand with the increase in encrypted web traffic volume and supply chain attacks, security professionals in India will spend more on tools that use Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to fight malware attacks, said a Cisco report on Wednesday. Applying these tools can help enhance network security defences and, over time, "learn" how to automatically detect unusual patterns in encrypted web traffic, Cloud and Internet of Things (IoT) environments. The "Cisco 2018 Annual Cybersecurity Report" showed that more than half of the organisations surveyed in India are reliant on automation, ML and AI. "Attackers are exploiting undefended gaps in security, many caused by the expanding Internet of Things (IoT) and use of Cloud services. Defenders often pay scant attention to the security of these systems. Unpatched and unmonitored IoT devices present attackers with opportunities to infiltrate networks," Vishak Raman, Director, Security Business, Cisco India & Saarc, told IANS.

Machine learning (ML) systems, an element of what is known as Artificial Intelligence (AI), can outperform people in a number of tasks though they are unlikely to replace people in all jobs, say researchers. In a "Policy Forum" commentary published in the journal Science, Tom Mitchell of Carnegie Mellon University and Erik Brynjolfsson of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) -- both in the US -- said that tasks that are amenable to ML include those for which a lot of data is available. ML can be a game changer for tasks that already are online, such as scheduling, but its is not a good option if the user needs a detailed explanation for how a decision was made, according to the authors. The researchers explained that machine learning tends to automate or semi-automate individual tasks, but jobs often involve multiple tasks, only some of which are amenable to ML approaches. Jobs that do not require dexterity, physical skills or mobility also are more suitable for ML, the researchers said.

Aiming to reduce the possibilities of signals failing, Indian Railways has undertaken remote condition monitoring of the system, a new approach for the national transporter, to predict failures through the effective use of Artificial Intelligence. The Signalling system is vital for safe train operations and the railways completely depend on the health of its signalling assets alongwith real time information. Currently, the railways follow a manual maintenance system and adopt find-and-fix methods rather than predict-and-prevent approach. "Now, we are introducing remote condition monitoring using non-intrusive sensors for continuous online monitoring of signals, track circuits, axle counters and their sub-systems of interlocking, power supply systems including the voltage and current levels, relays, timers," said a senior Railway Ministry official involved with the project. The system entails the collection of inputs on a pre-determined interval and sending this to a central location.
